How to pick the right sunscreen without losing your mind

Because protection shouldn’t feel like a chore

The sun doesn’t ask if you’re “just popping out” or “not planning to tan”. It does its thing whether you’re at the beach, walking to work, or sitting by a café window. And while most of us know sunscreen is important, choosing the right one often feels like navigating skincare with a blindfold on. Gel, cream, mineral, chemical, SPF 30 or 50—where do you even begin?

Spoiler: the perfect sunscreen doesn’t exist. But the right one for you does. The key is knowing your skin, your routine, and what you’ll actually apply every day (not just on holiday).

Start with your skin, not the SPF number

It’s tempting to go straight for SPF 50 and call it a day. But while the number matters, how the product feels matters just as much. If it’s greasy, heavy, or pills under your makeup, chances are you’ll skip it—and that’s when damage creeps in.

Oily or acne-prone skin? Opt for a lightweight formula or fluid that won’t clog pores. Dry or sensitive? Look for added hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid or glycerin. A skin soothing gel can also help calm redness or irritation, especially after sun exposure. And always choose broad-spectrum coverage to protect against both UVA (ageing) and UVB (burning) rays.

Texture is half the battle

You’ll be more consistent with sun protection if your SPF feels good. Luckily, sunscreen has evolved way past chalky, sticky creams. Now you’ll find elegant textures that absorb quickly and leave no white cast behind.

One great innovation? The SPF serum. It’s a hybrid product that layers like a skincare serum but delivers real sun protection. Ideal for mornings and perfect under makeup, it’s especially useful if you hate the feeling of heavy cream. Some versions even include extras like anti-ageing actives or pigmentation care—multitasking in the best way.

Mineral vs. chemical: choose your fighter

Mineral sunscreens use ingredients like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to reflect rays, making them ideal for sensitive skin. They sit on the surface and start working immediately. Chemical filters, on the other hand, absorb UV rays and tend to feel lighter—but may irritate reactive skin. There’s no winner here, just what works best for your face.

Don’t forget the reapply rule

No sunscreen lasts all day. Sweating, swimming or simply existing in summer heat breaks it down. That’s why reapplication matters—especially if you’re outdoors for hours. Powder SPF, sticks or mist versions make topping up much less of a hassle.

Sun safety isn’t seasonal

You’ve heard it before but it’s worth repeating: sunscreen is not just for summer. UV rays don’t hibernate, and neither should your habits. Picking the right formula makes year-round protection less of a “task” and more like brushing your teeth—quick, essential, and second nature.

Don’t rely on makeup for full protection

Yes, your foundation might boast SPF 15 or 30, but that doesn’t mean you’re covered. Most people don’t apply nearly enough makeup to reach the level of protection advertised on the label. And even if you did, it wouldn’t be evenly distributed or built for long wear in the sun. Think of SPF makeup as a bonus, not your main defense. A dedicated sunscreen layer underneath your makeup is still essential. And if you’re worried about ruining your look with reapplication, try SPF setting sprays or touch-up powders specifically made to go over makeup without smudging or caking.
